Crop Improvement - Agricultural Entomology
- Improvised ITK (rotten crabs) was made for the control of rice gundhi bug (Leptocorisa acuta) which gives 70% control of gundhi bug at par with chemical control.
- Novel ready to use product containing parasitoid, Hyposoter ebeninus was developed against most destructive pest of cabbage, Pieris spp. and the product submitted for patenting.
- Synthetic diet for rearing citrus trunk borer larvae was developed and applied for patent. Hammering at oviposition sites and blocking the larval tunnel with imidacloprid mud was found most effective in reduction of citrus trunk borer adult emergence.
- Developed IPM technology for the management of brinjal fruit and shoot borer (Lucinodes orbonalis). Films on this technique was made in Khasi and Bengali languages and telecasted through DD Tripura and Meghalaya.
- Honey harvesting technology was developed for Melipona and Trigona bees. Using this technique the harvesting is made easy and absconding of the colony is also reduced.
- Five different earthworm species viz., Perionyx excavates,Perionyx sansibaricus,Amynthus difringens,Eisenia foetida andOctochaetona beatrix were identified from Northeast region. Out of these, Perionyx excavatus was found most efficient but at par with exotic species, E. foetida in decomposition of crop residue, kitchen waste and trash paper, forest liter except pine needle.
- Unique phenomenon of mass flowering and fruiting of Melocanna baccifera and sporadic to mass flowering of Dendrocalamus hamiltonii was recorded after 48-50 years and 18-20 years, respectively during 2004-2008 in Mizoram and Meghalaya. Nine rodent species were collected and identified from bamboo flowering areas of Mizoram and Meghalaya.
- The biochemical analysis showed that protein contents were higher in bamboo fruit (10.50g/100g) and seed (13.125g/100g) and crude fiber was remarkably higher in bamboo fruit (9.623g/100g) in comparison to rice and maize. Lysine content was highest in bamboo seed (886.69mg/gN) as compared to rice (230.0mg/gN) and maize (200.0mg/gN).
- Studies indicated that bamboo flowering did not have any effect in the upsurge of rodents.
- Use of zinc phosphide followed by bromadiolone in bamboo bait stations proved effective in controlling rodents and saving the poison bait from weathering.<
- Surveyed 9375 ha area in 67 districts of eight states of NE India and 39,369 insect specimens belonging to twelve orders were collected from different agro ecosystems and 893 insect species were identified.
- Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Verticillium lenanii were isolated, evaluated and found effective against rice leaf folder, white grub and white back plant hopper.
- Vivek Hybrid Maize-15 was found resistant to maize stem borer. Carbofuran 3G (whorl application) @ 300 g a.i./ha recorded 88.25% control of cob borer of maize with 3.53 t/ha yield.
- Aqueous extract of Melia azedarach (5%) showed ovicidal action causing 48% egg mortality and 46 to 65% mortality of different instar larvae of cabbage butterfly at 72 hours after treatment.
- Sel-1, Sel-2, Sel-3, DVRT-1, KS-227 and CO-3 varieties of tomato were recorded as highly susceptible and DVRT-2 and Avinash were recorded as susceptible to root knot nematode, Meloidogyne incognita.Local herbal plant, Ja-mardoh<(Houttuynia cordata) leaf powder @ 1.5 g/kg soil was found highly effective in controlling root knot nematode as well as increased in growth parameters and yield of tomato.
