ICAR-NRC on Yak Organized Yak Health Camp
Dirang, Jun 09: With the change in season, the migration of yaks to the higher altitude begins. The yaks in the West Kameng district also start their onward journey to the pastures in the higher altitude. This unique animal of the cold region became susceptible to various diseases during the summer season. Therefore, ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (NRCY), Dirang organizes health camp for the yaks before they moves to higher altitude.
A yak health camp was organized ICAR-NRCY today at Rocky Area –I, nearby Sela pass in the border of the West Kameng and Tawang district. All total around 350 pure yaks of 09 families were covered during the yak health camp. Besides the health coverage the yak herders were distributed with medicines for internal parasites, anti-diarrheal drugs, herbal antiseptic ointments and sprays for their animals. The camp was conducted under TSP plan of the institute.
During the camp, the scientists from the institute interacted with the yak herders and briefed them on scientific yak husbandry practices. Shri Tsering, Gaon Burha, Lubrang village who himself is a yak farmer was also present in the camp along with his migratory animals. He thanked the Director, Dr. S. M. Deb of ICAR-NRCY, Dirang for organizing the yak health camp at such a remote and inaccessible location. All the yak herders appreciated the dedication of the scientists of the institute. The yak health camp was successful with active participation of Dr. D. Medhi, Senior Scientist, Dr. Joken Bam and Dr. Sourabh Deori, Scientists and Mr. Tsering Khandu of ICAR-NRC on Yak, Dirang.
