Mr. Rio, Local MP and Former Chief Minister distributes the soil health card.

 

The World Soil day was observed by KVK Dimapur on 5th December 2015 at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Jharnapani, Medziphema by distributing 250 soil health cards to the farmers of four villages of Dimapur district. The occasion was graced by Shri Neiphi-u Rio, Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister of Nagaland as chief guest, Shri Zhaleo Rio, IAS (retd.), Member of Legislative Assembly, 5- Ghaspani, II as guest of Honour and Dr. A. Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRC-Mithun as Special guest.

 

Speaking on this occasion the Chief Guest, Shri Neiphi-u Rio emphasised that the soil has been neglected for too long, and have become a “nearly forgotten resource,” as we fail to connect soil with our food, water, climate, biodiversity and life. If the situation continues like this, there will be tremendous shortage of arable land in near future. Looking into the future consequences the UN General Assembly declared 5 December as World Soil Day, Mr. Rio stated. The basic aim of this campaign is to connect people with soils and raise awareness on its importance in human lives.

 

The guest of honour Mr. Zhaleo Rio appealed the farmers to adopt the technologies from Research Institutes in order to maintain the Soil health and requested the ICAR to train the farmers about soil health and restoration of soil fertility. Dr Abhijit Mitra, Director, ICAR-NRC on Mithun asked the farmers to understand the importance of Soil as Soil is integral part of sustaining our life on earth.

While welcoming the guests Dr Bidyut C. Deka, Joint Director encouraged the farmers to apply organic manures as well as the fertilizers to sustain the crop productivity based on the recommendation made in the soil health card. The programme ended with Vote of Thanks by Dr Anamika Sharma, Programme Coordinator, KVK Dimapur.
