KVK- East Sikkim Promotes and strengths Women SHGs for Organic Oyster Mushroom Production Technology
A day long training-cum-demonstration on Oyster Mushroom Production Technology was organized by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, ICAR Research Complex, Sikkim Centre, Ranipool, East Sikkim on 4th July, 2015 to strengthen the self-help groups of Timpyem village of Ranka Block under ‘Integrated Farming System for Livelihood Improvement of Tribal Farmers of Sikkim (TSP)’. Around 22 farmwomen from KSG self help group of the village participated in the programme.
The main objective of the programme was to provide skill development through training on mushroom cultivation and residue recycling technology to make them self sustainable by organic mushroom production in the region. The program resulted in capacity building on mushroom production technology, learning and knowledge sharing on mushroom varieties, mushroom production and management of agro-based residue of mushroom production. The participants learned how to cultivate mushroom organically and then set up business and earn income for themselves through the program. They were also exposed to method demonstration with the concept of “Learning by Doing” during the program. The sessions helped the participants to train in different methods of mushroom farming by the resource persons like Mr. Boniface Lepcha (SMS-Horticulture), Dr. N.J.Singh (SMS-Plant Protection), Dr. J.K.Singh (SMS-Plant Breeding) and Ms Pallabi Phukan (SMS-Agril. Ext.), KVK East Sikkim, Ranipool. To make use of the knowledge imparted to the participants during the program, the experts will act as liason to monitor the village frequently. The experts also encouraged the participants to undertake the venture into commercial scale.
