ICAR, KVK, West Garo Hills, Tura Celebrated World Soil Day-2017

 

World Soil Day was celebrated by KVK, ICAR, West Garo Hills on 5th December, 2017 in collaboration with Department of Agriculture, Garo Hills, Meghalaya at DLRSL, Research Office, Sangsanggre, Tura. A total number of 136 farmers from different villages and districts of Garo Hills attended the programme. Shri Lympung Laloo, Joint Director of Agriculture, Garo Hills, Tura welcome the chief guest, officers, staffs and the farmers attending the programme. Shri D.D Shira, Hon’ble Additional Deputy Commissioner, West Garo Hills, Tura graced the programme as chief guest. He encouraged the farmers to adopt the habit of using the soil with utmost care for our future generations. He further suggested the farmers not to use excessive fertilizers by saying that polluted soil will affect negatively in our health. He also encouraged farmers to share their knowledge to their neighbours and friends and spread the importance of preserving soil nutrients. He also added that co-operation and hard work will save our soil for our growing generations.  Smt. N.Ch. Sangma, DHO, South-West Garo Hills, Tura stressed upon using the chemical fertilizers and pesticides in recommended dose to the soil because using it excessively will kill the useful micro-organisms and soil will get degraded. She further suggested them to cultivate cover crops so that the soil will not get eroded. Shri. M.D. Shira, DAO, West Garo Hills, Tura expressed the importance of soil and encouraged the farmers to conserve the soil fertility by using organic manures and bio pesticides. Shri. A.S. Singh, Senior Scientist and Head (I/C), K.V.K, ICAR, West Garo Hills expressed the importance of Soil Health Card and suggested the farmers not to use the chemical fertilizers and pesticides excessively and that it should be used as per recommended in the Soil Health Card. He also encouraged the farmers to adopt crop sequencing and integrated farming system. He focused on importance of pulses which makes the soil fertile by fixing the atmospheric Nitrogen and that it can be grown after harvest of paddy. A total number of 120 Soil Health Cards were distributed to the farmers. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Smt. Alva Vesta D. Shira, Scientific Officer, DLRSL, West Garo Hills, Meghalaya. After the vote of thanks, video on Soil Health Card was shown to the farmers.
