ICAR Sikkim Centre concluded training programme on Approaches for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
The valedictory function of NICRA sponsored 10 day Training Programme on Diversification of Hill Agriculture: An Approach for Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (February 16-25, 2016) was held on February 25, 2016 at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong, Gangtok. The course was meticulously designed by Dr. R. K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Sikkim Centre which includes various resource conservation techniques, technologies for efficient water/nutrient utilization for enhancing production of crop and soil health. The breeding strategies for livestock, pig, poultry and fisheries and their health management were also be included and discussed by different resource persons during the training. Training was attended by forty four participants across the country including policy makers, researchers, teaching faculties from various universities and field functionaries from dept. of Agriculture and Horticulture, Govt. of Sikkim.
Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Senior Scientist (Agronomy) and Course Coordinator of the training programme informed that forty four Assistant Professors/Scientists/Extension workers/Researchers from the different SAUs, Spices Board KVKs and field functionary of Govt. of Sikkim participated in the training programme. Twenty two resource persons from different parts of the country delivered thirty eight lectures covering various aspects related to climate change, adaptation and mitigation strategies for managing emerging environmental problems for enhancing sustainability of mountain agriculture. The participants expressing their views on the course found it very informative.
Dr. H. Kalita, Principal Scientist (Agricultural Entomology) in his valedictory remarks highlighted the significance of this training programme in the crucial time of climate change. He highlighted that in hilly ecosystems, climate change will affect the productivity and soil health. He stressed on the new strategies for adaptations to increase agricultural production and productivity.
Sh. P.T. Bhutia, Director, H&CCDD, Govt. of Sikkim and Chief Guest of the programme shared his experiences on climate change like untimely drying of springs, disappearance of water bodies and melting glaciers. Expressed his concern on declining Mandarin production at lower altitude might be outcome of climate change. He urged the participants that the information learned from the training programme must have reached to the resource poor’s farmers of the each corner of Sikkim.
Shri P. T. Bhutia presented certificates and training manual to the participants and complimented ICAR Sikkim Centre for organizing such training course for the benefit of researchers, teachers and extension officers. All the Scientists and Staff of ICAR Sikkim Centre were present in the program. The program was convened by the Sri S. M. Kandwal.
At the end of the program Dr. Subhash Babu, Scientist (Agronomy) and Course Coordinator proposed vote of thanks.
