Three days training programme on ‘Promotion of Integrated Organic Farming System (IOFS) model for enhancing livelihood security and income of tribal farmers of Meghalaya’

     A three day’s training programme on “Promotion of Integrated Organic Farming System (IOFS) model for enhancing livelihood security and income of tribal farmers of Meghalaya was organized at lowland organic farm of ICAR Research Complex, Umiam and adopted organic villages of Meghalaya viz. Mynsain and Pynthor under the Tribal Sub-Plan (TSP) during 24-26th March, 2021. The programme was attended by 30 farmers from different villages of Ri-Bhoi district, Meghalaya. The farmers were apprised the need of adoption of organic farming in integrated organic farming system (IOFS) mode for provide food and nutritional security, enhancing system productivity, income and efficient use of farm resources. Field visits to IOFS farm developed at Institute farm and at farmers’ field comprising agricultural and horticultural crops, live stocks (cattle, pig, etc.), poultry, duckery, fishery and residue recycling through compost or vermicompost tank were done. Practical demonstrations vis. a vis. hands on training were also given to the participants for no-till cultivation of pea, chickpea, toria in rice fallow, preparation of vermicompost, bio-pesticides etc. On farm training were also imparted to the trainers on identification of nutrient deficiency in plants, animal husbandry practices under organic mode and organic insect pest and disease management practices. Various inputs like improved seeds of vegetables, organic pesticides, irrigation pipes, vermibeds, bee box  and small farm tools like knapsack sprayer, watering can etc. were also distributed to the farmers.
