Training programme on “Principles of inland fisheries management” organized by ICAR-CIFRI Regional Centre at Guwahati during April 5-7, 2018
ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute, Regional Centre, Guwahati organized a 3-day paid training programme on “Principles of inland fisheries management” during April 5-7, 2018 at Guwahati. Fifteen B.Sc. (Zoology) students with Industrial Fish & Fisheries specialization and two teachers of Srikishan Sarda College, Hailakandi, Assam participated in the training programme. The Centre generated Rs. 7,500/- as training fees from the training programme and other expenses were born by the S.S. College. The training programme started with an address by Dr. B.K. Bhattacharjya, Course Director and Head (Acting), ICAR-CIFRI RC, Guwahati who welcomed the participants and sought active participation on their part so that the learning can be fruitful. He urged the participants to extract maximum possible information from the resource persons through interaction. Dr. Dipesh Debnath and Dr. Pronob Das (Convenors) explained about the course content of the programme. Shri A. K. Yadav and Simanku Borah (Co-convenors) conducted pre-training and post-training assessments at the beginning and end of the training programme, respectively, through pre-structured question papers. Other personnel of the Centre including scientists (Dr. Sona Yengkokpam and Mrs. Niti Sharma) and technical officers (Shri B. C. Ray, STO and Amulya Kakati, ST) acted as resource persons.
The training programme consisted of 15 lectures comprising of theory and practical aspects of inland fisheries management that were ably dealt with by the scientists and technical personnel of the Centre. The theory classes comprised of a wide range of topics covering aspects of fisheries enhancements in openwaters, present status of world, Indian and Northeast fisheries and aquaculture, ichthyofaunistic resources and their conservation, enclosure culture technologies developed by ICAR-CIFRI, principles of integrated and polyculture systems, ornamental fisheries and aquarium management, breeding and seed production of commercially important fishes, principles of fish nutrition and feed formulation as well as fisheries statistics applicable to inland fisheries. The post-training assessment of the students showed a significant impact as there was marked increase in their overall performance in terms of subject knowledge gained, which was evident from an increase in mean score of the students from 33 to 66% with an apparent increase in their confidence level. The valedictory session was presided over by Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head (Acting) of the Centre, in which Prof. Dr. R. M. Pant, Director, NIRD & PR, NERC, Guwahati acted as the Chief Guest. Dr. Pant in his motivational address urged the students to develop entrepreneurship skills and stressed that a country like India where the average age of people is 29 years needs entrepreneurs in the fisheries sector as well. Dr. Himabrata Chakravarty, HoD, Department of Zoology, S.S. College, Hailakandi, who was the Teacher-in-Charge thanked Dr. B.K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore for permitting the students to undergo the training programme at the Centre at concessional charges. He thanked the Head (Acting), Convenors, Co-convenors, resource persons and other staff of the Centre for successfully organizing the training programme and expressed his satisfaction on the performance of the students post-training.
