ICAR RC for NEH Region observed Swachhata Pakhwara
ICAR RC for NEH Region organized Swachhata Pakhwara from 16th to 30th May 2016. On the 16th May, the pledge was taken by all the staffs and the programme was inaugurated by Dr. S. V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam. During the inaugural speech, the Director urged all the staffs and residents of the colony to keep the campus and residential colony clean and also motivated the people to keep the environment free from pollution. During the 15 days long programme, series of activities were conducted which was focused on sensitizing the staffs and residents of ICAR about the importance of cleanliness. On the second day of the programme (17th May), a cleaning drive in residential colony of ICAR RC for NEHR was coordinated by Sh D. K. Sonowal, Estate officer. All the residents of the colony including officials, their family, farm workers joined in the cleaning drive. In the forenoon of 18th May, Sh. Bhaskar Jyoti Deka, Maintenance Engineer, coordinated another cleaning drive for the office campus, mobilizing the office staffs to clean the office premises. Dr Krishnappa, Scientist, arranged a seminar on cleanliness, waste management and disposal with two guest speakers from relevant fields and one from ICAR to sensitize the ICAR fraternity and their families on proper waste management on 19th May. Dr. (Mrs.) Meena Khwairakpam, Head, Dept. of Civil Engineering, NIT, Meghalaya gave an elaborate presentation on Solid Waste Management and Processing. Mr. Paul Lokho, Community Development Specialist, Mott MacDonald Pvt. Ltd. and Consultant, Urban Affairs Dept. Govt. of Meghalaya, gave an overview of the best practices in solid waste management and sanitation pertaining to Shillong city. Ms. Prabha M. Devi, Scientist (Environmental Science), Division of NRM, ICAR RC for NEHR, Umiam spoke on the environmental implications of solid waste and management practices. On 23rd may, a quiz competition with a theme on awareness about clean environment and current affairs was coordinated by Dr Uday Saikia, Sr. Scientist, with 22 numbers of participants. The next day, 24th May, an extempore speech competition with topics related to awareness about waste management, cleanliness and health was organised for the office staffs with 9 numbers of participants. On 29th May, drawing competition for the colony children on the theme of “my clean home” was conducted. On the same day, quiz and extempore speech competitions for the children and colony ladies were also held coordinated by Dr I. Shakuntala Devi, Principal Scientist. A big number of participants showed up that day with more than 60 numbers. On 30th May, prizes were distributed to the winners of the various events organized. During the closing ceremony, Dr. S. V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam, remarked that children and grown-ups alike should learn and teach each other on how to keep the colony and each division of the institute clean. He also suggested a separate waste disposal for biodegradable and non-biodegradable. A decision to involve every office staffs to clean the office campus every Saturday for the rest of the year was also taken. The Director also reminded that a secret inspection committee will be constituted to inspect on the cleanliness status of each division and quarter in the colony. Dr. A. K. Tripathi, Head, Social Sciences Division who coordinated all the activities with the various committees, briefed on the activities conducted during the forthnight. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks extended by Dr I. Shakuntala Devi, Principal Scientist, Division of Animal Health.
