Success counts sweetest at KVK West Siang , Arunachal Pradesh
With the commencement of Kharif season, the activities of farmers are at peak in a serene Basar town of West Siang District of Arunachal Pradesh. Some are busy in Jhuming, the others in preparing their fields for growing vegetables, yet others are worried about possible attack of diseases and pest in their crops. The KVK office is flooded with queries and visitors. The experts of KVK are busier than ever, some are attending farmers at KVK others are running at 8 am to conduct training prorammes at farmers field. The whole day disappears within minutes.
Today’s (15/03/2016) target is to conduct a practical training at Bam village. Climbing up and jumping down bamboo fencing, crossing river through a pair of tumbling bamboo sticks with both hands full of training material, the team including two enthusiastic brave lady scientists Ms. Deepa Lal (Horticulture) and Ms. Wangnem (Soil) accompanied with another energetic scientist Dr. K Suraj Singh (Plant Protection) and the Team Leader Dr. Chitrangad Singh Raghav, Programme Coordinator, reaches the venue in a far flung field sharp at 9 am after winning the hurdle race. Mr. Tagam Bam – the Technician of KVK Farm is managing the show in closing coordination with local progressive and active farmers, Mr. Karken Bam and Mr. Ligo Bam.
The training starts with the welcome address by Dr. Raghav followed by interactive lectures, discussion and practicals by rest of the experts in their respective subjects. In addition, the farmers learn preparation of Bordeaux mixture and its application on orange trees to ward off disease and pest. They are also taught about the usefulness of cultivation of off season crops under protected farming system and methods of preparation and benefits of vermin compost. Farmers are advised to avoid Jhum cultivation due to its irreversible consequences detrimental to the eco-system and in turn all of us. Dr. Raghav invited many more progressive farmers to come forward to join hands with KVK to work in the village in mission mode. Farmers seem motivated, convinced and happy at the end. Their day is very useful, all the participants acknowledge unanimously.
Regaining energy from the success of programme, the KVK team is back with a smile on their faces and strength in feet to win another hurdle race and take up another programme on the other day in some other village. The activities keep on beginning with the sunshine in the land of rising sun, taking a pause at night and continue, endlessly. Somebody has rightly said, “Success counts sweetest”.
