Workshop on “Scientific Fish Farming” organized by ICAR in collaboration with Tylliang Progressive Multipurpose Co-Operative Society

 

Under the Tribal Sub plan, the Division of Fisheries, ICAR Research Complex, Umiam, Meghalaya initiated a programme on promotion of scientific fish farming in collaboration with the Tyllilang Progressive Multipurpose Co-Operative Society Ltd., (Lad Sohbar) Sohra (Registration No. Sohra-7 of 1999) in East Khasi hill district of Meghalaya.  The basic objectives of the programme was to build capacity of the tribal farmers in scientific fish farming and to provide critical inputs such as fish seeds, nets  etc. in the first year under the TSP for popularizing fish farming activities.  The society has recently dug out 12nos. of small to medium size fish ponds covering a total water spread area of about 3815 sq. MT for fish rearing at Tharia Umdud near the Meghalaya- Bangladesh border with an intention to distribute fish fingerlings to the tribal farmers of the area for livelihood. More than 10,000 nos. of fish fingerlings were provided to the society by the Fisheries division, ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya to stock in these ponds. Fishes are growing satisfactorily and so far no mortality of fish has been recorded.

To take forward the initiative a one day Workshop on Scientific Fish Farming was organized by the Division of Fisheries, ICAR-RC for NEHR, Umiam in collaboration with Tyllilang Progressive Multipurpose Co-OP Society, Sohra on 30th Sept. 2015 at MG-NREGA Community Hall (BDO Office) under Shella Block, Sohra Sub-Division, East Khasi Hill District under TSP (Tribal Sub Plan). Altogether 45 nos. of farmers attended the workshop.  The workshop was inaugurated by Mrs. H.  Papang , Sub-divisional Fisheries officer of the Department of Fisheries, Sohra, Govt. of Meghalaya in presence of Dr. S.K.Das, Principal Scientist and Head, Division of Fisheries, , Dr. S. Hazarika, Principal Scientist and Nodal Officer, TSP;  Mrs. K.Nath, Scientist of ICAR RC, Umiam, Meghalaya ;Mr. F.S.Japang, Chairman and Mr. Balawan Suiting, Secretary of the Co-operative Society.  The farmers were trained on various aspects of scientific fish farming and also demonstrated water testing for pH measurement and its corrective measures by lime.   A total of 15000 nos. fish fingerlings; 50 bags of lime and 29 nos. of pH paper pack were distributed to all farmer under the TSP by the ICAR besides a total of 3 nos. of cast nets and 3 nos. of dragnets were provided for community use.
