Celebration Of Sankalp Se Siddhi Cum World Honey Bee Day Organised by KVK-Ribhoi, ICAR Umiam
KVK-Ri-Bhoi celebrated Sankalp Se Siddhi Cum World Honey Bee Day on the 19th August 2017, at the MS Swaminathan Auditorium, ICAR, Umiam. The programme started with the National Anthem which was followed by the pledge taking administered by the Chief Guest, Hon’able Member of Parliament, Shillong, Shri. Vincent H. Pala. The Chief Guest expressed his happiness for being of the part of the programme and further urged the farmers to sincerely and whole-heartedly take up all the activities of doubling Farmers’ Income as outlined in the pledge; he emphasized that they should adopt activities like Integrated Farming Systems, Apiculture, Soil Health Management in addition to their farming activities, in consultation with ICAR, Umiam and KVK Ri Bhoi. Moreover, he set a target of doubling their production of crops via a slogan “A kilo today, double that tomorrow” and quoting the slogan of Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, “More crop per drop”.
Dr S. V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR RC NEH Umiam, Meghalaya urged the farmers to adopt IFS and value addition of local products.
Dr B.C. Deka, Director, ATARI, Zone-VII, ICAR, Umiam, requested the farmers to participate in the training programmes on post harvest, value addition and preservation of major crops and urged the farmers to meet the target of double income within 3 years, rather than 5 years.
Dr. A. K. Tripathi, Director, ATARI, Zone-VI, ICAR, Guwahati, encouraged the farmers to take the benefits of warehousing and cold chain to reduce post harvest loss and increase the income.
Dr. A. Sen, Nodal Officer of KVKs, ICAR RC NEH Umiam, Meghalaya gave a brief talk on Livestock Based Entrepreneurship for doubling farmers’ income with component based IFS.
Shri. K. D. Kharkrang, a progressive farmer of Ri Bhoi shared his experience on Honey bee production in his own farm adopting the scientific methods of bee keeping through the interventions of KVK Ri Bhoi.
About 100 Vanaraja poultry chicks were distributed to the farmers of the adopted village of Pilot Project on Doubling Farmers Income. The scientists of ICAR & KVK discussed about the cultivation of different crops in pre-rabi seasons, crop diversification and intensification, scientific livestock farming (poultry & pigs), organic farming water management, processing and value addition and marketing channels.
About 250 farmers from ten different villages of Ri Bhoi district and 50 Scientists of ICAR & KVK, officers of the State Departments and Bank Officials participated in the programme.
Dr. M. Mokidul Islam, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK RI Bhoi welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri. P. Jana, Programme Assistant (Computer), KVK Ri Bhoi.
