Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Pawan Chamling Visited ICAR Stall During Sikkim Organic Day Program
Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi declared Sikkim as Organic State on 18 January 2016 during his Sikkim visit. Since then every year Government of Sikkim is celebrating the day as ‘Sikkim Organic Day’. This year 2-day program was organized at Saramsa Garden, Ranipool during January 17-18, 2018.
Organic agriculture offers the most sustainable solutions for developing the agricultural sector and provides food security with least negative impact on the environment and also offers solutions for sound rural development by providing healthy food and creates jobs. ICAR-National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong, Gangtok is pioneering development of organic production technologies for agriculture and horticulture crops for last 12 years has also displayed technologies during the program. The seven sections of the Institute in agricultural sciences namely agronomy, agro forestry, agricultural entomology, horticulture, plant breeding, plant pathology and soil science and three sections in animal sciences viz., animal health, animal nutrition and livestock production and management was exhibited as the sustainable organic production technologies during the program in close collaboration with KVK East Sikkim, Ranipool.
While visiting the exhibits, Hon’ble Chief Minister, Shri Pawan Chamling also visited ICAR Stall along with Acharya Balkrishna, CEO Patanjali; Hon’ble State Agriculture Minister Government of Sikkim, Shri Somnath Poudyal and other dignitaries showed immense interest in the research and development activities being carried out by the Institute.
Joint Director, Dr. R.K. Avasthe detailed about the research and development activities being carried out by the Institute. He highlighted the latest initiatives taken up by the Institute for the benefit of farming community of Sikkim. He also emphasized the ICAR technologies available for doubling the farmer’s income. ICAR also had a farmers’ corner in the stall where progressive adopted farmers with ICAR technologies also exhibited their organic produce to the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Sikkim.
