ICAR-KVK orgsnises farmers scientist interaction for winter crops

 

ICAR-KVK East Sikkim, Ranipool organized a day long programme on Farmers Scientists Interaction and Technological Backstopping of Tribal Farmers of Sikkim (IFS-TSP) at Thanka, Martam on October 21, 2016 in order to enhance the livelihood security in the state. A total of 26 farm women and rural youth participated in the programme. Seeds of vegetable pea, cole crops, carrot, radish, spinach and coriander along with biopesticides were distributed in the programme.

Dr. R. K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR - NOFRI emphasised on the importance of “Swacchh Bharat Abhiyan” and their linkage with production of quality organic nutrient through proper waste management. He detailed the importance of vegetables especially for nutritional security of rural poor. Further, he stressed on the importance of the quality organic seed in the State. He encouraged the farmers to undertake production of quality seed and retain them for next two to three years to become self-reliant in organic seeds and motivated the farmers to develop agri-preneurial ability towards the organic seed production to uplift their livelihood as well as self sufficiency in seed since there is huge demand of organic seeds in the state.

Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Programme Coordinator (I/c) and Senior Scientist (Agronomy), KVK East Sikkim stated about the “Swacch Bharat Abhiyan” as dream project of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India. He urged the farmers to grow vegetable pea in rice fallow through no-till practices. He encouraged the farmers to implement the improved production technology of Rabi crops for sustainable farming and further detailed the value of vermicompost as source of organic nutrition to the crops in the state.

Dr. N. Johnson Singh, SMS (Plant Protection) KVK - East Sikkim detailed the major insect pests and diseases of potato and other Rabi crops in Sikkim conditions and their organic management practices.

Dr. J.K. Singh, SMS (Plant Breeding) KVK - East Sikkim, detailed about the cultivation practices of yellow mustard in rice –fallow under zero till techniques.

Shri Boniface Lepcha, SMS (Horticulture) KVK - East Sikkim briefed the farmers about improved production technology of Rabi vegetables which can empower the farming community and their livelihood status. He also briefed the nursery management under low cost poly structure for quality vegetable seedlings production.

Ms. Pallabi Phukan, SMS (Agriculture Extension), KVK - East Sikkim coordinated the programme.

Mr. Sonam Tshering Bhutia, Farmers’ representative of Thanka village expressed happiness towards the endeavour putforth by KVK - East Sikkim and ICAR -NOFRI with different agricultural technologies in the village. He further ensured more and better cooperation on behalf of the farmers towards the organization in carrying out other agricultural activities for the welfare of the farming community.
