Tripura CM inaugurates “Rice Day & Innovative Rice Farmers Meet 2018” - more than 6000 farmers participated
Tripura Chief Minister Shri Biplab Kumar Deb inaugurated “Rice Day & Innovative Rice Farmers Meet 2018” of ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Tripura centre, at Mirza in Gomati district of Tripura on 22 October, 2018. Shri Deb along with Shri Pranjit Singha Roy, Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of Tripura visited rice experimental and germplasm blocks maintained at Farmers Field Experiment Station at Mirza Math and addressed a large gathering of farmers, extension persons, administrators and scientists.
Chief Minister, Tripura and other dignitaries first visited the ICAR -Tripura Centre’s rice experimental plots on farmers field, where about 3600 entries and breeding lines of rice are under evaluation under different programs. Dr. S. P. Das, Principal Scientist (Plant Breeding) briefed about the rice breeding activities by ICAR, Tripura Centre at the location to the Chief Minister and Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Govt. of Tripura. Both Shri Biplab Kumar Deb and Shri Pranjit Singha Roy have shown keen interest on such a wide diversity of rice lines under evaluation on farmers’ field.
Welcoming the dignitaries and farmers, Dr. Basant Kandpal, Joint Director, Tripura Cnetre, briefed about the Tripura centre’s activities and technologies ready for adoption. Dr. Narendra Prakash, Director, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Meghalaya, appraised about the new initiatives taken by the Research Complex to accelerate green revolution in NEH region and assured all scientific support to Tripura Government and farmers for this transformation.
Shri Pranjit Singha Roy, Minister of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, emphasized that new and high yielding varieties coming out of dedicated research efforts like this should be taken up whole heartedly by the developmental departments so that ultimately real benefit goes to the farmers and farmers income is doubled.
Chief Minister, Shri Biplab Kumar Deb, urged that necessary steps should be taken that at least half of the rice area in Tripura is brought under the varieties released by ICAR RC NEH Region, Tripura Centre within two years of time. He expressed confidence that if similar production, what he witnessed today at the experimental plots, seed production plots and FLD plots during field visit, is achieved by at least half of the farmers in Tripura then state can double the farmers’ income within 2 years. The enthusiasm and interest shown by such a large gathering of farmers was notable.
