KVK, East Sikkim trained farmers for preparation of Ragi (Finger millet) biscuit

 

One day Awareness Programme on “Biscuit preparation from ragi (finger millet)”was organized today, the 20th September, 2014 at Marchak by KVK, East Sikkim under ATMA sponsored project.

Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK, East Sikkim address the participants of the programme and stated that finger millet is a widely cultivated crop in Sikkim, however farmers are lacking  in  knowledge  on  the  value  added  products  of  the  crop.  Bakery  activities  should  be encouraged for more entrepreneurial development in the state. He encouraged the farmers to obtain maximum benefits from the farm school opened recently in the village by KVK- East Sikkim under ATMA, East Sikkim.

During the programme Miss. Anushree Gogoi, Programme Assistant, Home Science, KVK East Sikkim demonstrated step by step process on preparation of ragi biscuit through active participation  of  farmers.  She  also  elaborated about the benefits of intake of ragi in different forms  of  food  as  well  as  profits  that  can  be earned if this technology can be taken up as a small scale enterprise.

 

In  this  occasion  Dr.  N.  Johnson  Singh,  SMS (Plant Protection) delivered a lecture on major insect pests of rice in Sikkim condition and their management through organic and cultural practices under farm school. He also explained about the organic management practices in respect of different tools of IPM on rice.

The programme was ended with the distribution of IPM kits by Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Programme Co-ordinator, KVK, East Sikkim under farm school.

Shri Boniface Lepcha, Prog. Assistant, KVK, Ranipool welcomed the gathering and narrated the  importance  of  ragi  biscuits  and  IPM  on cereal crop. Dr. J. K. Singh, SMS (Plant Breeding) KVK, East Sikkim, Ms. Karma Peden Kaleon, BTM, ATMA (East) and Ms.   Deepti Gazamer coordinated the programme. The progamme was brought  to an end by vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Shishir Kharka.
