Visit of Padma Vibhusan Professor MS Swaminathan to CRRI

Padma Vibhusan Professor MS Swaminathan visited Central Rice Research Institute, Cuttak on 16 November,2014. Professor Swaminathan in his address emphasized on the role of public research institute in agricultural development of the country and suggested that climate and natural resource degradation issues must be addressed vigorously. Referring to the contribution of CRRI, he brought out that the seed of Green Revolution in rice was shown in fields of CRRI. He further drew the attention of the scientists to the plights of small and marginal farmers with respect to their resources and climate change. Describing the food security scenario of India, he advised that scientists should conduct research to increase the productivity of rice by 50% from available land, which is estimated to be 30% less than today, by using less water, chemical fertilizer and labour. He was of the opinion that modern scientific tools are to be strategically used to achieve the target of higher productivity coupled with climate resilience.
