KVK Ri-Bhoi Organized Vocational Training Programme On “Protected Cultivation Of High Value Crops For Sustainable Income Generation”
The ICAR-KVK Ri-Bhoi successfully organized a week long vocational training programme on “Protected Cultivation of High Value Crops for Sustainable Income Generation” during 21st to 27th January, 2017. Dr. Utpal Barua, SMS Horticulture as a course director of the programme selected 15 rural youths and farmers from Umden Mission and Umrynjah villages of Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya for said training. The basic objective of the programme was to enhance skill and knowledge on the protected cultivation of crops especially, vegetables during off season production, producing high quality vegetable nursery, cultivation of crops like gerbera, orchids, strawberry, etc to generate employment and income. Accordingly, during the programme two exposure trips to Horticulture Farm, Govt. of Meghalaya, Dewlieh and RRTC (NGO), Umran were undertaken. Practical sessions on polyhouse construction, crop selection, land preparation, soil nutrition management and planting were undertaken. Pest and disease incidence and their management and nutrient management of soils in the polyhouse were thoroughly discussed with trainees using PPTs and film shows.
The seven days endeavour ignited the minds of the participants for crop diversification and sustaining steady income through use of low cost polyhouse. The visit to Deliwh Horticulture farm gave a new idea of growing ferns inside polyhouse as fern is in high demand for bouquet preparation. The programme ended with feedback and interaction session of the farmers with the Dr. M. Mokidul Islam, Senior Scientist and Head of the KVK Ri-Bhoi and Dr. A.K. Tripathi, Nodal officer KVK’s, ICAR RC NEH Umiam, Meghalaya with the distribution of certificate of participation to the participants for their future benefit.
