ICAR-KVK East Sikkim imparted training on organic ginger production
Technology transfer refers to the spread of new ideas from originating sources to ultimate users. Ginger is predominantly cultivated in Sikkim in mandarin-ginger, maize-ginger, beans-ginger cropping systems with traditional method. Organic package of practices have been developed at ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong has to reach the farmers’ field. Although there is ample scope for further improvement of production and productivity of ginger for raising the income level of the farming community of the state through domestic and international organic marketing. Potentiality of recommended technology through demonstration has been attempted among the tribal farmers of East district Sikkim with the objective to combat the causes of low yield and lower economic returns. Therefore, ICAR-KVK East Sikkim, Ranipool organized day long training cum demonstration programme on organic ginger production technology for livelihood improvement for farmers of East Sikkim under NICRA-TDC project on May 1, 2018 at Lingtam, Martam. The programme was organized with the leadership of Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong, Sikkim and guided by Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Sr. Scientist and Head (I/c), KVK East Sikkim. Around 28 nos. of ginger growers of Lingtam, Thaka and Yangthang villages attended the programme. Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong, Sikkim said that organic ginger production is the main cash crop option after large cardamom in the state. The farmers may increase the production and productivity of ginger and earn high income with adoption of complete and proper organic packages of practices. Farmers were given hands on practice with complete organic package of practices in farmers’ field.
Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Sr. Scientist (Agronomy) and Head (I/c), KVK East Sikkim, ICAR-NOFRI detailed about the maize-based climate resilient cropping system which can be a suitable tool under changing climatic scenario. Mr. Boniface Lepcha, SMS (Horticulture), KVK, East Sikkim explained about the organic ginger cultivation method to the farmers. The farmers were also briefed about the different diseases and pests of ginger with their management by organic method during the interactive session. Dr. Manoj Kumar, SMS (Agronomy) also interacted with farmers and explained about the queries on Kharif field crops raised during the program. Coordinating the program, Ms. Pallabi Phukan, KVK-East Sikkim encouraged the farmers to carry out the agricultural activities in commodity group-wise for successful agri-entrepreneurship development in the village. Ms. Bina Rai, SRF, NICRA-TDC project also helped in coordination of the program. Mrs Chalimaya Chettri, President Ajambari SHG, expressed her gratefulness towards ICAR-KVK East Sikkim for continuous agricultural technological back-up and input support to improve the production and productivity of agricultural and allied sectors.
