ICAR Sikkim Centre Outfitted Nagaland Team with Organic Vegetable Production Techniques.

 

ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Sikkim Centre, Tadong has successfully organized three days ‘Training-cum-Awareness Program on Organic Vegetable Production’ for the Team of Prodigal Home NGO, Nagaland during February 10-12, 2015. A team of 10 persons visited ICAR Sikkim Centre to get equipped with organic vegetable production techniques.

During the program, Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Sikkim Centre highlighted the relevance of this training program for promoting the organic farming systems. He emphasized the need of good soil health in organic production system. He also discussed in detail the ‘concept of physico-chemical and microbiological properties of soil in relation to soil health’. He further said that we would look forward for long term association with Nagaland people in organizing more training programs of such kind. Joint Director also presented a copy of book ‘Handbook of Organic Crop Production in Sikkim’ to the team of Prodigal Home.

Dr. Ashish Yadav, Senior Scientist (Horticulture) convened the program and also detailed on the ‘organic vegetable production techniques; ‘nutrient deficiency symptoms in vegetables’ and ‘plasticulture techniques for quality vegetable production’. Dr. H. Kalita, Principal Scientist (Entomology), delivered talk on ‘insect pest management in organic vegetable crop production’; Dr. Subhash Babu, Scientist (Agronomy) talked on ‘organic farming and organic production standards and good agriculture practices in organic vegetable production’; Shri Shaon K. Das, Scientist (Soil Science) talked on ‘integrated organic nutrient management’ and Mr. Boniface Lepcha, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture), discussed the ‘organic nursery raising and disease management of vegetable crops’ during the training program. All the team members also visited the ICAR Sikkim Centre Research Farm and were briefed about the ongoing research and development activities. Giving the feedback of the program Ms. Losa Kayina, Program Manager, Prodigal Home said that program was well organized and the training manual provided contains all possible details of organic crop production techniques. Shri K. Sani, Project Manager, Prodigal Home also highly appreciated the efforts of ICAR Sikkim Centre in organizing the training program.
