Farmers’ Training cum Awareness Programme on “Organic Production Management Practices for the Farmers of Ri-Bhoi District” at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam
Three days Farmers’ Training cum Awareness Programme on “Organic Production Management Practices for the Farmers of Ri-Bhoi District” was organized by Dr. Romila Akoijam, (Scientist, Entomology), Ms. Moirangthem Prabha Devi (Scientist, Environmental Science), Dr. Sandip Patra (Scientist, Entomology) and Dr. Aniruddha Roy (Scientist, Agricultural Economics) at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam from 21st to 23rd March, 2016 under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP). The main purpose of the training was to incite the responsiveness among the farmers about the organic crop production management without the use of any chemicals. With the idea of organic crop production has to begin from a particular pocket of the region, a total of 30 farmers from village of Mawbsein, Ri-Bhoi district participated in the programme, which was started on 21stMarch, 2016 with the inaugural session. With the commencement of the programme, Dr. S. Hazarika, Principle Scientist & Head, Division of NRM & Nodal Officer, TSP, welcomed the dignitaries and participants, highlighted the importance of organic crop management of the production system and soil health management in this region. Dr. Satish Chandra, Head, Division of Crop Protection highlighted the importance of organic crop production and also appreciated the efforts initiated by the coordinators. Honorable Director of the institute, Dr. S.V. Nagachan graced the inaugural session. He stressed upon the scientist and farmers’ interaction. Emphasis was given on more understanding of the various biopesticides and botanicals and insemination of the information in local language.
The three days training programme included several lectures and field visits within the premise of the programme. During the training, Organic farming in north eastern hill region of India, Organic nutrient management, Insect pests and their eco-friendly management, disease management in organic farming, scope of biopesticides in organic pest management, adverse effect of pesticides on different compartments of environment and economics of organic farming had been enclosed by different scientists viz., Dr. Jayanta Layek, Dr. B.C. Verma, Dr. Sandip Patra, Dr. Pankaj B., Dr. Romila Akoijam, Ms. Moirangthem Prabha Devi and Dr. Aniruddha Roy. The training ended with valedictory function on 23rd March, 2016. Dr. Satish Chandra, Head, Division of Crop Protection graced the valedictory programme. He distributed certificates, brinjal seeds, neem product and Trichoderma viridae product, to all the farmers. Leaflets and handouts were also distributed to the farmers so as to increase their level of understanding of the topics discussed during the programme. The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Aniruddha Roy, Course Coordinator of the programme.
