One month vocational training on Oyster mushroom cultivation was organised by KVK West Garo Hills in the month of December 2017.Mushroom is one of the favourite food item of the garo tribe and they to some extent satisfy their demand by gathering naturally found mushroom from the jungle. Some of the educated unemployed youth approached KVK and expressed their interest for a vocational training on low cost mushroom cultivation for a year round production. KVK West Garo Hills took utmost care to arrange vocational training for 14 tribal unemployed youth. The training programme started on 5th December with a welcome speech by Mr.A.S.Singh Senior scientist and head (i/c).Technical knowhow about the cultivation method was briefed by Dr. Joyoshree Mahanta, ACTO (Plant Pathology) and also finally delivered vote of thanks. From the second day onwards detailed class about the cultivation method using paddy straw, as it is easily available in West Garo Hills was held. The trainees were also trained during practical class on cutting paddy straw, soaking in water, boiling, draining excess water from paddy straw and finally bed preparation. They were also apprised in detail about opening of the plastic bag after full mycelial run and thereafter the care to be taken for the beds like watering till the bloom and harvest of the first flush. On 29th December in the valedictory function the trainees were given certificates along with basic inputs like spawn, polybag etc. to start production on small scale in their respective village.The trainees were informed to be in touch with the KVK for further assistance under TSP for establishing the production unit on group basis.
