National Seminar on Challenges and Opportunities for Farmers’ Prosperity in Hill Agriculture” Held at ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Umiam On 29th to 30th November 2018
ICAR Research complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya, National Academy of Agricultural Science (NAAS), International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT) and the Indian Association of Hill Farming Umiam collaboratively organised a two days National Seminar on “Challenges and Opportunities for Farmers’ Prosperity in Hill Agriculture” from today (29th -30th November 2018) . The two days national seminar will witness a series of presentations in the three technical sessions. Today the technical session witnessed presentations on “Frontier technological options for Hill Agriculture. State wise presentations will be held on the day two of the seminar on the “Issues and strategies for agricultural development in NEH Region including potential farming, cropping systems, and organic agriculture.” Technical session three will have a panel discussion on “Road Map for Scaling Sustainable and Resilient Agriculture technologies in Hill Agriculture.
The inaugural session of the National Seminar began with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest Shri Wailadmiki Shylla, Member of Legislative Assembly, Jowai. Addressing the gathering he said that exploring the opportunities for the farmers’ remains the key focus of the seminar. He stressed on the fact that government can play a key role in working in unison with the institute. Welcoming the dignitaries in his welcome address Dr. N Prakesh, Director, ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umaim said that there is a huge difference between hill and plain agriculture and making the roadmap exploring the differences remains one of the major challenges of the seminar which targets to achieve the vision of our Prime Minister Narendra Modi of doubling farmers’ income by 2022. A brief account about the programme was given by Dr. B.P Bhatt, Director, ICAR- Research complex for Eastern Region, Patna, he said that seminar is centred on research for development and to take forward the potential technologies and practices. The seminar is organised at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya since the institute is serving the farmers’ of the region from the year 1975 and is the only multi discipline institute. The motive of the seminar is to focus on what needs to be done to achieve the target of doubling farmer’s income. The outcome of the brainstorming sessions remains the highlight of the seminar. Dr M.L Jat, Principal Scientist, CIMMYT, India emphasized on the fact that though the region has fragile ecosystem but has still achieved immensely in of field agriculture with the contributions of our scientists. Integrated Farming System and Sustainable Agriculture go hand in hand and the region has huge potential for organic farming. The seminar in the course of two days will focus on these aspects and come up with a road map and an action plan for the future. The Guest of Honour for the occasion Shri Allentry F Dkhar, Advisor and Secretary to the Chief Minister, Govt of Meghalaya speaking on the occasion said that the farmers’ need to explore the potentials of the region and ensure maximum benefits from agriculture without harming the natural ecosystem. “Mission Organic” should be one of the focal point in the two days national seminar on “Challenges and Opportunities for Farmers’ Prosperity in Hill Agriculture”. The formal vote of thanks was presented by Dr S. Hazarika, Head, Division of NRM, ICAR RC for NEH Region. Scientist from all over the region along with the state representatives participated in the ongoing two days national seminar to chalk out the plan for future.
