National Conference on Opportunities and Strategies for Sustainable Pig Production

Shri V. K. Pipersenia, (Additional Chief Secretary and Agriculture Production Commissioner to the Government of Assam) inaugurated a two-day National Conference on ‘Opportunities and Strategies for Sustainable Pig Production’, focusing issues on sustainable pig husbandry on 20 December 2014 in its campus at Guwahati, Assam.

The session was presided by Dr. K. M. Bujarbaruah (Vice-Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat).The technical sessions of the conference started with the keynote address of Dr.K.M.Bujarbaruah, who shared a vision for development of sustainable pig production systems in India, where he emphasized on how ecology, economics and society should coordinate to achieve the same. Dr.K.M.Cherian, (legendary cardiac surgeon and a Padmashri awardee) indicated the utility of pig models in understanding and treatment of human diseases. He has pointed out for development of micro-pigs, which can be best model for biomedical application. The conference critically deliberated the issues of contemporary relevance in sustainable pig production such as feeding systems, climate change, pig breed development, health, zoonosis, pork product development and value chain under different production systems. Based on the deliberations over six technical sessions, a road map was prepared to augment sustainable pig production in India to ensure nutritional and livelihood security among farming community.

Besides experts and scientists, representatives from NABARD, SBI, entrepreneurs and progressive farmers participated in the conference. The conference served as a platform for interaction among researchers, policy makers, bankers, members, from farming community and business houses.
