ICAR Established ‘Model Kiwifruit Orchard’ in South and West Sikkim
ICAR Sikkim Centre has established ‘Model Kiwifruit Orchards’ at Perbing, South Sikkim and Phanglang, Thingling I, Khechuperi, West Sikkim for promoting the kiwifruit cultivation in Sikkim under the guidance of Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR Sikkim Centre under the Flagship Program on Temperate Horticulture. ICAR is playing fundamental role in strengthening the technological backstopping in diversifying horticulture production to develop self-reliance in the state. A total of 30 farmers participated and benefited with ICAR technologies.
Dr. Ashish Yadav, Senior Scientist (Horticulture) while briefing the progressive farmers highlighted the importance of kiwifruit in Sikkim and shared that it could be the most important crop in higher hills where Sikkim Mandarin can’t grow well. He also detailed the ‘Organic Kiwifruit Production Techniques’ to the progressive farmers. Later on, under his guidance and supervision ‘Model Kiwifruit Orchards’ of 50 plants each were established in the farm of Shri Tashi Sherpa and Shri Tenzing Ongdup Sherpa, Members of Perbingtar Farmers Club, South Sikkim and Shri Theng Hang Limboo, Phanglang, Thingling I, Khechuperi, West Sikkim.
Shri Nima Chodden Sherpa, Panchayat Member, Perbingtar, South Sikkim was also present during the program. Mr. Avinash, SRF assisted actively in the kiwifruit plantation program.
