Field day on Improved Agricultural Practices under “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” programme

 

To commemorate the visionary programme of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India “Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav” (My village, My pride), a field day cum awareness programme on “Improved Production Technology of Crops and Fish” was organized on 18th March, 2016 at ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill (NEH) Region, Umiam, Meghalaya. The programme was coordinated by Team XI (Dr. S.K. Das, Dr. Jayanta Layek, Dr. Amrita Banerjee, Dr. RajappaJ.J. and Ms. PiyashiDebRoy)of ICAR Complex, Umiam under the Tribal Sub Plan (TSP).

A total of 100 farmers across 5 villages of Meghalaya participated in the programme.The programme was started with the welcome address by Dr.S.K. Das, Team Leader of group XI and Head, Division of Fisheries, ICAR Complex, Umiam. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the need of improved crop production techniques and role of fish based integrated farming system in the region. He further added that they should implement the technologies learnt from ICAR Complexin their respective villages. Dr. S. Hazarika, Head, Division of NRM and Nodal officer of TSP, speaking on the occasion urged the farmers to get the maximum profit out of the training. He further added that the institute is for them and the scientists are putting their best efforts for developing and dissemination of technology including critical inputs like improved quality seed and other materials for sustainable hill farming.The programme also witnessed various presentations regarding improved crop production techniques, disease management, scientific fish farming etc.

Field visits as well as practical demonstrations regarding improved method of crop production, zero tillage and agro-forestry system were done. Through the field visit, the farmers got an exposure to the scientific technology on how efficiently utilize the resources for sustainable production. Seeds and planting materials of improved varieties of different agricultural and horticultural crops, multipurpose trees, organic pesticides, soil health promoting microbial cultures, fish fingerlings etc. were distributed among farmers. Leaflets on “Production Technology of Maize, Rice and Soybean” in Khasi language were also distributed among them.A scientists and farmer’s interaction programme was organized regarding various aspects of agriculture in the region.The farmers interacted with the experts and enquired about improved seed, production technology and insect pest and disease management options. The field day was concluded with promise of every possible help from ICAR to popularize the Agriculture and allied activities in NEH region.
