KVK Ri-Bhoi Organized A Week Long Vocational Training programme On “Low Cost Vermi-Compost Production”
The ICAR-KVK Ri-Bhoi successfully organized a 7 days vocational training programme on “Low Cost Vermicompost Production” during 18th to 24th February, 2017. The course director of the programme was Dr. Popiha Bordoloi, SMS (Soil Science) and 18 rural youths, farmers and farm women from Umsoh matan, Kdonghulu, Khweng, Mawbri, Umden Mission, Umeit and Umrynjah villages of Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya were participated in the training programme. The basic objective of the programme was to enhance skill and knowledge on the vermicompost production and its application in the crop fields for profit maximization. During the training course various topics were discussed elaborately like ‘Construction of Vermicompost Unit’, Low cost structure by utilizing Bamboo and polythene lining’, ‘Pit method of vermicompost production’, ‘Methods of Vermi-wash preparation and its application in the crop field’, ‘Importance of fertilizer in crop cultivation’, ‘Management of Soil fertility through organic sources of Nutrients’ etc. by using PPTs and film shows. Dr. Mokidul Islam, Senior Scientist and Head, KVK- Ri-Bhoi had thoroughly described about the ‘Importance of Vermicompost in Crop Cultivation’ during the inaugural Session. Practical sessions on ‘Tank Filling of Vermicompost Unit’ at KVK farm, ‘Harvesting of vermicompost and worm separation’ at Kyrdem Village, ‘Application of vermicompost at High value crops’ at KVK Farm were undertaken. Two exposure trips were also conducted for deep understanding of the process of vermicompost and to show them practically a successful entrepreneur of vermicompost production Mr. C. Shadap of Kyrdem village of Ri-Bhoi District and Division of Agronomy, ICAR (RC) for NEH Region. By this vocational training programme trainees were enlightened with different technique of vermicompost production, worm rearing methods and organic crop cultivation, so that they could become self sufficient by adopting this technology as a business for income generation.
