Launching and Training Programme on Backyard Poultry Farming Organised under the Collaborative Project

The Launching Programme of the collaborative project entitled “Empowering Tribal Farmer through Backyard Poultry Farming in NEH Region” was held on 16th March, 2021 in the DNB Conference Hall of the institute. The project is funded under NEH component of Directorate of Poultry Research, Hyderabad and implemented by the Division of Animal and Fisheries Sciences, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya covering three states viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Mizoram. The main objectives of the project are to introduce scientific backyard poultry production system and to create productive assets for the resource poor tribal farmers in the region through training, capacity building and input support. The program was graced by Dr. V. K. Mishra, Director of the institute and Dr. R. N. Chatterjee, Director, ICAR-DPR besides, Dr. K.K. Baruah, Principal Scientist and Head, Division of Animal and Fisheries Sciences along with other Head of the Divisions, scientists from both the institutes and the farmers. A two-days training programme was also organised on 16th and 17th March, 2021 covering 100 tribal farmers selected from different villages of Ri-Bhoi and East Khasi Hills districts of Meghalaya. The farmers were trained on scientific management of backyard poultry through theoretical and practical demonstration. The farmers were also provided with poultry chicks, waterer, feeder, poultry feed and basic veterinary medicines. During the interactive sessions, the famers thanked the institute for conducting such programme for their benefit and requested to conduct more such programme in the future. Dr. Sunil Doley, Principal Scientist, Dr. Sourabh Deori, Scientist and Dr. Rakesh Kumar, Scientists were Course Coordinators of the training programme.
