A Kisan mela for “Technology and Machinery demonstration” was organized at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam for field demonstration of agricultural implements and machinery, plastic lined water harvesting pond, micro irrigation and low cost poly house on 20th March, 2015. The activities in the mela included live demonstration of field machinery suitable for hill agriculture, water harvesting in plastic lined ponds & recycling through sprinkler irrigation systems and processing & value addition of the agricultural produce. More than two hundred farmers from different places of Meghalaya participated in the mela. Farmers were impressed by the live demonstration of the machines like grass/brush cutter, post hole digger, manual seed drill, vertical conveyer reaper, zero tillage row marker, winnower etc.  Some farmers have shown keen interest in plastic lining of water harvesting pond and low cost poly-house for flower & vegetable cultivation. Live demonstration of complete package of turmeric processing from cleaning to processing and oil extractions from mustard was also appreciated by the farmers. Two winnowers, silpaulin sheet for pond lining, briquette making mould & chulha, maize shellers and long handle weeders were distributed among the farmers. The mela was inaugurated by Dr. S.V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR NEH. He appealed to the farmers to create implements & machinery bank in their village and adopt custom hiring practices for costly agricultural implements to reduce drudgery and for timely completion of agricultural operations.
