KVK Ri-Bhoi Organised Field Day on Megha Tomato -3 Under Protected Cultivation.
The KVK Ri-Bhoi, ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya organized a field day on “Production of Off Season High Value Crops Under Low Cost Polyhouse” at Umden Mission village on 22/09/2016. The Programme was attended by 26 participants from Umden Mission and Umrynjah villages as well as neighbouring village.
An educated rural youth, Mr. Khlurpharnai Marwein under the guidance and assistance of KVK Ri-Bhoi cultivated Megha Tomato-3 under ployhouse during July-Sept, though tomato is not cultivated during this period of year due to heavy rainfall. An elaborative discussion was held among the SMS horticulture, Plant Protection and farmers about the low cost polyhouse technology and its usefulness for the cultivation vegetables especially during off season. They were made to convince how the technology can be exploited for the production of tomato, cucumber, capsicum during off season. The ployhouse can be made use to raise healthy vegetable nursery well in advance so that early transplanting can be achieved to catch higher price in early market. As we all know that “Seeing is Believing”, the farmers were ready to form SHG’s and start cultivating under low cost polyhouse. The SMS Plant Protection also interacted with the farmers annd emphasised on the importance of disease free healthy nursery for healthy crop and bumper yield. Mr. Khlurpharnai Marwein who is pioneer in this venture in the village was entrusted the responsibility to coordinate with the farmer SHG’s and KVK for horizontal expansion of the technology. The yield of Megha Tomato-3 expected to be higher than local variety of tomato.
