KVK Ri-Bhoi Organised One Day Awareness Programme on Soil and Water Conservation Strategies in Convergence with Soil & Water Conservation Division, Nongpoh
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Ri-Bhoi in convergence with Soil & Water Conservation Division, Nongpoh organized one day Awareness programme on “Effective Conservation Strategies of Soil & Water for Climate Resilient Agriculture” under NICRA project in adopted village Kyrdem on 2/8/2019. The aim of the programme was to explain and equipped the climate resilient farmers with latest conservation technologies to accelerate their awareness, knowledge, and adoption of soil and water conservation practices to tackle degradation and improve productivity. A total of 50 farmers participated in the programme along with KVK staff Dr. Mokidul Islam, Dr. Utpal Barua, Mr. Bankitkupar Mukhim, Mrs. Jessica Dohtdong, Mr. Samir Medhi and Mr. Wesk Nonsiej (Asst. Soil & Water conservation officer) as resource person to create awareness and in a way guiding the rural masses to take participatory innovative decision in order to reduce problems of natural resources degradation. He also explained about the strong links between measures for soil conservation and measures for water conservation which are directed primarily to one or the other, but most contain an element of both. He suggested in reduction of surface run-off by structures or by changes in land management to reduce erosion. Conservation strategies like cropping system, Agro-forestry, green manuring & residue management etc. along with various available schemes were discussed with the farmers for enhancing the adoption of conservation practices. Dr. Mokidul Islam & Dr. Utpal Barua also highlighted the demonstrated water conservation technologies under NICRA project of KVK Ri Bhoi and encouraged formation of grass root farmers organisation to increase extension outreach in order to disseminate information on new technologies and to raise awareness.
