KVK Ri-Bhoi Organized Training Cum Awareness Programme on “Irrigation and Management of Citrus Crops” Under Farm Innovation project

 

The KVK Ri-Bhoi, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam has organized Training cum Awareness Programme on, “Irrigation and Management of Citrus Crops” on 20th March, 2017 at Quinine village. The programme was attended by 69 farmers and was organized under the Farm Innovation Project on “Bamboo Based Drip Irrigation of Fruit Crops”. At the outset Dr. Mokidul Islam, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK briefed the participants on activities of KVK and its role on dissemination of technologies and upliftment of farmers’ livelihoods through use of scientific agricultural methods. Dr. Utpal Barua, SMS Horticulture and PI of the project thoroughly discussed with the participants on proper care and management techniques of Khasi mandarin which is an important crop of the region. He emphasised on water stress management during lean period of the year though mulching, Jalkund (small water storage structure) and providing life saving irrigation. The innovative method of drip irrigation using bamboo developed by Mr. Shembhalang Khongjoh was shown to the farmers and emphasised on adoption of the technology in large scale for micro irrigation. Mrs. Mousumi Gohain Das, SMS Plant Protection elaborated the organic methods of pest and disease management in citrus crops. At the end farmers were asked to report such innovative ideas to KVK for its proper validation and mass adoption.
