Interface meeting with Headmen and Mahila Biotech- KISAN Fellows for sustainable livelihood of farmers under Biotech- KISAN Programme organised by ICAR-KVK Ri-bhoi, Umiam, Meghalaya

One Interface meeting with Headmen and Mahila Biotech- KISAN Fellows   for sustainable livelihood of farmers, broadly on development of piggery under Biotech-KISAN Programme organised on 06.3.2021 by  ICAR-KVK, Ri-bhoi, Umiam, Meghalaya. The meeting was attended by Hub Facilitator, PIs, Co-PIs, Staffs of the Project, Headmen/Secretary’s and the Mahila Biotech- KISAN Fellows     holders of the eight villages i.e Mawlein, Mawkhan, Umshorshor and Lummynri (under Umsning block) and Thadnongiaw, Mawbri, Nonglakhiat and Lumshyiap (under Bhoirymbong block) adopted under the Biotech-KISAN Project entitled “Establishment of Biotech-KISAN Hub at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam Meghalaya”. The welcome address was given by   Dr. M. Islam, P.S. and Head, ICAR-KVK Ribhoi, Meghalaya.   A brief introduction and achievements of the project was given by   Dr. Ramgopal Laha, PS and Hub facilitator of Biotech-KISAN project. Dr. K.K Burua, PS, and Head, Division of Animals and Fisheries Sciences during his address mentioned about the important of pork for human nutrition. He also alarmed the house that as per latest Census, populations of pigs are decreasing. May be due to cost of production, as a result of increase price of concentrate feed. So he suggested locally available materials such as banana stem, colocasia, sweet potato and other farm by products can be utilise to supplement the feed requirement. Feedback was given by the Mahila Biotech- KISAN Fellows, progressive farmers and Headmen of the adopted villages and they thanked ICAR for adopt their villages under the Biotech-KISAN project as they are benefited through the interventions and expressed their desire for continuation of the project for some more years.

Dr. V.K Mishra, Director and Chief Guest congratulated Hub Facilitator, all PIs, Co-PIs, staffs, headmen, Mahila Biotech- KISAN Fellows  and the farmer’s beneficiaries for their keen interest and smooth running of the project. In his address, he stressed on doubling of the farmers income by the year 2022,   as it is targeted by the Honourable Prime Minister of India. To achieve this goal, integration of different components of agriculture like crop farming with the integration of livestock such as piggery, poultry, cattle and goat farming, is very much essential. Launching of Biotech-KISAN website and honoured to progressive pig farmer for excellent performance was done in the occasion by respected Director. Inaugural session was ended with vote of thanks given by Mr. B. Mukhim, SMS (Fishery Sc.), ICAR-KVK, Ribhoi. During Technical Session, lecture was given by Dr. Sandeep Ghatak, P.S. and Co-PI that was followed by the interaction with the Headmen and Mahila Biotech-KISAN Fellows. Overall meeting was ended with vote of thanks offered by Dr. Samir Das, Scientist and Co-PI with a special thanks to Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India.
