Inauguration of Tuber crops & food processing unit by Shri Conrad Sangma,MP,Tura
An inaugural function of Tuber crops & food processing unit at Bajengdoba ,North Garo Hills was organized by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Tura under Tribal Sub Plan (TSP), Govt. of India on 1st October 2016.
The function was graced by Shri Conrad Sangma ,Member of Parliament ,Tura constituency as Chief guest in presence of Shri S.C.Sadhu ,Deputy Commissioner,North Garo Hills , Shri J.R Marak, Ex MLA, Smt. Sujana Marak, DHO, North Garo Hills , Dr. S. V. Ngachan, Director, Dr A.K Tripathy ,Nodal Officer of KVK’s , Dr Anjani Kumar Jha, Principal Scientist, Division of Horticulture of ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam & Dr. Tanmay Samajdar,Programme Coordinator, KVK, West Garo Hills.
In the programme, 250 farmers of North Garo Hills district of different villages were participated. Speaking at the occasion, Shri Conrad Sangma appealed the line departments related to agriculture, horticulture and ICAR to execute the works in convergence mode for the welfare of farming community of Garo Hills.He congratulated, KVK,ICAR Tura and Bajengdoba Area Development Centre for establishment of Tuber crop food processing unit in the district. He expressed that Garo Hills is producing huge quantity of tuber crops, but due to lack of processing, it is used as raw products except some manual processing and farmers are not fetching good price for their produce.
Dr. S. V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR RC for NEH region, Umiam expressed that ICAR has been working in Garo Hills to enhance the production of tuber crops by introducing high yielding varieties from CTCRI, Kerala. He further added that lots of products are being made from tuber crops such as glucose sago etc. ICAR, Umiam has also been working on colocasia to reduce and remove oxalic acid which will be very much helpful for new born babies. He also added that huge quantity of tuber crops which were loss due to unavailability of processing unit will be solved in future. The programme was ended with vote of thanks by Shri A.S.Singh, SMS(Horticulture), KVK, ICAR, Tura.
