ICAR –NOFRI, Sikkim Holds State Level Review Meeting
A state level review meeting was organized by ICAR–National Organic Farming Research Institute, Tadong, Sikkim as per the suggestion of Shri P.D. Rai, Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Sikkim) on July 02, 2016 at ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong. The main objective of the programme was to acquaint Hon’ble MP with the activities being undertaken by different central government organizations working the field of agriculture and allied sector viz., ICAR – NOFRI (Tadong), CAE&PHT (Ranipool), NRC for Orchids (Pakyong) and NABARD (Gangtok).
Sri P.D. Rai, Hon’ble MP (Sikkim), Chairman of the meeting inaugurated the programme and suggested that henceforth such review meetings would be organized twice a year during January and June. He seriously viewed all the presentations made by different institutes and expressed satisfaction and encouraged to undertake more research and extension activities for the benefit of the resource poor farmers of the state. He stressed on successful implementation of Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna (PMFBY) for the benefit of farming community. He suggested for enhancing the crop production in the state through recommendation of organic nutrients as per the soil health card. He asked different stakeholders to embark on some pilot projects for conservation of water resources, especially in drought affected areas of Sikkim.
Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR-NOFRI, welcomed all the dignitaries and presented the overall research and extension activities of ICAR-NOFRI, Tadong, Sikkim of last three years. He emphasized on the need for intensive research programs including agriculture, horticulture and livestock components. During presentation he highlighted the deficiency in staff position of scientists, technical and administrative staff of ICAR-NOFRI as well as KVK East Sikkim which is making it difficult to accomplish the assigned targets.
Dr. P.K Srivastava, Dean, CAE&PHT, Ranipool presented the different achievements and activities of academic and research being undertaken during last two years. He mentioned the possibilities of value addition in some locally available vegetables, spices, fruits and some aromatic plants of Sikkim.
Dr. Rampal, Principal Scientist, NRC for Orchids, Pakyong briefed about the progress made by NRC for Orchids especially in research and development during last few years. He emphasized on conservation and enhancement of production of different Orchids in the region.Shri T.K. Ganesh Kumar, NABARD, informed about the activities implemented by NABARD, Gangtok during last year for the benefit of the farming community. He highlighted some available projects which can be exploited by the farmers of the Sikkim for their livelihood improvement.
