ICAR-NDRI, ERS, Kalyani, West Bengal and Division of Animal Health, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya jointly organized “Livelihood Improvement Programme through Livestock Interventions”

 

In connection with NEH Project Components of ICAR-NDRI ERS, Kalyani, West Bengal, Division of Animal Health, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya and ICAR-NDRI ERS, Kalyani, W. Bengal jointly organized a one day programme on “Livelihood Improvement through Livestock Interventions” on 21.03.2018 at Umshorshor village, Ri Bhoi District, Meghalaya. Dr. R. Laha, Principal Scientist (PS), Division of Animal Health, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region welcomed the farmers and scientists. Dr. A. Sen, PS & Head, Division of Animal Health, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Dr.T.K. Dutta, PS & Head and Dr. A. Mandal, PS, ICAR-NDRI ERS, Kalyani graced the occasion and mentioned regarding importance of  Livestock farming in this hilly region to improve nutritional security and livelihood.. Mr. E. Syiemlieh, Headman of the village was also present in this programme. Dr. A. Sen in his introductory speech motivated the farmers to develop a piglet cluster in their village, which could meet the demands of other parts of Meghalaya. Dr. T.K. Dutta, in his talk, highlighted the importance of scientific livestock farming with special emphasis on nutritional issues and he also motivated the farmers to start dairy farming. Dr. A. Mandal discussed the need of maintaining elite parent stock and opportunities of setting up pig breeding cluster at a village level. Dr. Caressa, Research Personnel of Division of Animal Health translated the messages in Khasi. The training programme was followed by distribution of inputs in the form of kuroiler chicks, pig feed, poultry feed and other nutritional supplements. In the second half of the day, animal health camp was conducted by Dr. S. Das, Dr. A.A.P. Milton, and Dr. Amarjit, Division of Animal Health. A total of 85 farmers actively participated and benefitted from this programme. Dr. T.K. Dutta, PS & Head ICAR-NDRI ERS, Kalyani thanked the Director ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Scientists of Division of Animal Health and farmers for their support and active involvement.
