Release of “Roadmap for development of openwater fisheries development of NE region” prepared by ICAR-CIFRI at Guwahati on 16.06.17

 

Guwahati, 16.06.2017: A stakeholders’ consultation on “Formulation of National Inland Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy” was organized by the National Fisheries Development Board, Regional Centre, Guwahati in collaboration with the ICAR- Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR- CIFRI), Barrackpore and ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE), Mumbai at NIRD & PR, NERC, Guwahati on 16.06.2017.

A total of 50 delegates including Shri A. K. Joshi, IFS, Joint Secretary, DAHD&F, New Delhi; Shri M. Chaudhury, Fisheries Advisor, NITI Ayog, Govt. of India; Dr. Dilip Kumar, Ex. VC, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai; Dr. B. K. Das, Director, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. Gopal Krishna, Director, ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai; Shri S. K. Das, Director of Fisheries, Govt. of Assam; Dr. B. C. Jha, Head (Retd.), RWFD, ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore; Dr. P. K. Katiha, Principal Scientist, ICAR, New Delhi; Dr. B. K. Bhattacharjya, Head, ICAR-CIFRI, Regional Centre, Guwahati; Mr. P. K. Hazarika, Technical Manager, AFDC Ltd., Guwahati; officials from fisheries departments of NE states; officials from National Fisheries Development Board Regional Centre, Guwahati; Scientists from ICAR-CIFRI & ICAR-CIFE, Mumbai and progressive fish farmers, fishers, NGO members from NE states participated in the consultation.

A policy document prepared by ICAR-CIFRI, Barrackpore entitled “Roadmap for development of openwater fisheries resources in Northeastern Region” was released by the Joint Secretary, DAHD&F, New Delhi in the consultation. The policy document prepared by ICAR-CIFRI contains state specific roadmaps for openwater fisheries development in the NE states of Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. It contains background information about each state, their present fisheries resources, fish & seed production and productivity & potential of openwater fisheries resources like floodplain wetlands and reservoir fisheries (including stock enhancement, enclosure culture, requirement of fish seed, feed, infrastructure, etc.), riverine fisheries, capacity building, HRD requirement and SWOT analysis.
