ICAR AP Centre organized Training cum distribution programme for plantation of Kiwi and Walnut under NEC project in Anjaw and Ziro.
For livelihood improvement of tribal farmers of Anjaw district and Ziro, Lower Subansiri district two training cum distribution programme were organized under NEC funded project on “Integrated Horticulture including Fisheries for North Eastern Hill region” at Hayuliang, Anjaw and Ziro, Lower Subansiri in collaboration with KVK, Anjaw and Kiwi Growers Cooperative Society, Ziro on 23rd and 28th January, 2019.
In Khupa, Anjaw altogether 69 farmers, farm women and rural youths from different villages of 3 circles i.e., Chaglongam, Hayuliang and Manchal attended the training programme. The programme was graced by Shri. Sode Potom, APCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Anjaw district as Chief Guest. Other dignitaries present were Dr. H. Kalita, Joint Director, ICAR AP Centre, Basar, Dr. Manish Kanwat, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Anjaw, Dr. Rajesh Alone, Scientist (Agro-forestry), ICAR AP Centre, Basar and Ms Rebecca Eko, SMS, Horticulture, KVK Anjaw. In his welcome address Dr. H. Kalita, Joint Director, ICAR AP Centre, Basar briefed the gathering about the importance of organizing this programme highlighted the importance of kiwi & walnut cultivation for livelihood improvement of farmers. He further explained about the importance of hand pollination for getting desired fruit size of kiwi. The chief guest of the programme, Shri. Sode Potom, APCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Hayuliang in his speech appreciated the efforts made by ICAR AP Centre, Basar and KVK Anjaw for the benefit of the farmers and urged them to take opportunity for cultivation of such potential crops like kiwi and walnut. In the technical session, Ms Rebecca Eko, SMS Horticulture gave a detail power point presentation on the package & practices of kiwi fruit and walnut. She elaborated the different varieties, proper layout, planting season, planting distance, intercultural operations and training & pruning techniques. The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Manish Kanwat, Senior Scientist & Head, KVK Anjaw. At the end of the programme, 6,000 nos. of grafted seedlings of kiwi fruit & 1,200 nos. of walnut seedling were distributed among the farmers.
In Ziro, Lower Subansiri district the training was attended by 46 farmers of various villages viz. Hong, Bimchi, Mudantage, Hija Hari, Tajong , Michi, Bamin, Bascamp of Lower Subansiri district. These farmers were provided with 4000 grafted seedlings of Kiwi and 1300 seedlings of walnut. The programme was successfully organized in coordination with the Kiwi Growers Cooperative Society, Lower Subansiri district, Ziro. In her inaugural speech, Mrs. Kago Kampu, Treasurer of Ziro commercial group briefed about the activities of the Kiwi Grower’s Cooperative Society. She also discussed the problems being faced by the farmers in grading and packaging of fruits. She requested to install the grading machine and packaging unit for the welfare of kiwi growers of district. Dr. Rajesh A. Alone, Scientist (Agro-forestry), ICAR AP Centre, Basar, briefed about the programme and the importance of plantation of kiwi and walnut for livelihood improvement of farming community.Dr. Jitendra Kumar, Scientist (Soil Physics), ICAR AP Centre, Basar emphasized over the proper soil sampling and soil testing for better nutrient management. He advised the farmers to adopt vermicomposting for better soil health.The programme was concluded with the vote of thanks by Sh. Gyait Loder, Secretary, Kiwi Grower’s Cooperative Society, Lower Subansiri district, Ziro.
