Awareness programme on ‘Deworming and Vaccination in Backyard Poultry’ organized at Farmer’s FIRST villages, Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya
ICAR Research Complex for NEH region, Umiam, Meghalaya organized Awareness programme on ‘Deworming and Vaccination in Backyard Poultry’ and Animal Health camp at Nongagang village, Ri Bhoi, Meghalaya under Farmer’s First Project on 1st September’ 2017 under the leadership of Dr. R. Laha, Principal Scientist and P.I. of the project and active co-operation from Dr. Pankaj Sinha and Dr. D. M. Firake, Scientists & Co-PIs of the project. A total of 39 farmers from different villages (Sarikhushi, Purangang, Borkhatsari, Lalumpam, Borgang, Nongagang, Nalapara, Mawphrew, Umtham) were participated in the programme. Dr. Meena Das, Scientist (Veterinary Parasitology), Division of Animal Health and Co-P.I. of the project, made them aware of importance of deworming in poultry to prevent them from various parasitic diseases. They were also made aware of vaccination in poultry against various viral diseases (Ranikhet disease, Fowl pox, Marek’s disease etc). Inputs in the form of veterinary medicines such as anthelmintics, vitamins and mineral supplements, antidiarrhoeal, antibiotics, acaricides, topical cream etc were distributed among the farmers. Pigs (117 nos.), poultry (854 nos.), goats (2nos.), cattle (19 nos.), buffaloes (4 nos.), ducks (37nos.) and rabbits (8 nos) were treated under this programme. Vaccination (Lasota and R2B) of poultry birds (98 nos.) against Ranikhet disease was also done. In this occasion extension folder entitled ‘Deworming and Vaccination in Livestock and Poultry’ in both English and Khasi language was also distributed among the farmers. The farmers were also advised to do regular deworming and vaccination of their birds. Two progressive farmers of farmer FIRST villages Jiten Sohkhwai and Midot M. Binong, Astha Barman (SRF, FFP), Azriel M. Tariang and Ibanylla Swer (Field Assistant, FFP) actively cooperated to make this programme successful.
