Diagnostic Visit of Cole crops in Farmers’ Field in Ri-Bhoi District
A team from ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam namely Dr Jayanta Layek, Dr Sandip Patra and Dr Utpal Dey (SRF, Plant Pathology) conducted a diagnostic visit to Mr. Jril Makhroh (Village Mynsain) and Mrs. Thisilon Rynghang’s Field (Pynthor village) for inspecting insect pests and diseases in cole crops grown under organic farming on 16th November 2018. Under Network Project on Organic Farming (NPOF), cultivation of vegetables like cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli are being promoted to cultivate under Integrated Organic Farming System mode. Inputs like seeds of improved varieties are being supplied by ICAR to enhance the production of winter vegetables. During the visit, the team observed insect pest infestation symptoms in the cole crops. While, the cabbage was infested by both tobacco caterpillar and cabbage butterfly, the broccoli was only infested by cabbage butterfly. Spraying of azadirachtin 0.03% @ 3ml/l or Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) formulations@2g/l at 10 days interval is advised for management of these insects in cabbage and broccoli.
