ICAR Training On Pig Farming Under Deep Litter Housing System Held At Chhoten Basti, North Sikkim.
Under Tribal Sub-Plan for Pig Production under Deep Litter Housing model ICAR Sikkim Centre has already built six deep litter houses in Chhoten basti and Chungthang and eighteen piglets have been distributed to six beneficiaries, In continuation of second phase of training especially focused on feeding and health management of piglets for faster growth. Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, flagged off sufficient amount of de-wormers and ectoparasitic drugs along with bulk quantity of feed supplements, which are the essential for faster growth and timely attainment of sexual maturity in piglets and hoped that this small intervention definitely boost the pig production along with quality compostproduction which will help in fertility and boost agricultural production in remote part of North Sikkim.
Dr. Brijesh Kumar, Scientist, (Animal Reproduction) highlighted the importance of pig production under deep litter housing system and helped in installation of vermi-beds for compost production. It was also under lined that necessity of farm compost production is very much essential as state has been declared organic. Further, he stressed on the use of onfarm resources especially tuber crops and cole crops to reduce the cost of pig production and also advised for timely deworming and daily mineral mixture supplementation in feed as essentials of faster growth.
A total of 10 tribal women participated in the training and sh. Neeraj Singh SRF (NICRA) and sh. Passang Bhutia co-ordinated the training cum medicine distribution programme and helped in deworming and distribution of other drugs.
