Survey conducted at Barfu Village
KVK Anjaw in collaboration with ICAR RC for NEH Region, Barapani, Meghalaya conducted a survey to monitor the prevailing condition of acute shortage of water at Barfu village on 7th February, 2017. The village is located at an elevation of 1700 m above sea level and known for acute scarcity of water in the entire Anjaw District. During the survey, different methods of water harvesting structures were discussed with the villagers to find out the feasible solution for harvesting and storing of water within the village. Er. Huidrom Dayananda Singh, Scientist, Farm Machinery and Power stress that as the sources of water to the village is located at a distance of 3-4 Km with elevation difference of about 1600 m and as per the distribution of undulating land structure in the village, development of water pumping system may be a long process and not feasible for providing immediate solution to combat scarcity of water in the village. Moreover, certain process has to be followed up such as soil mapping, checking of soil structure, availability of aquifers and ground water table etc. which is a time taking procedure. Therefore, low cost rain water harvesting structure, Jalkund (Plastic pond) will be the best option for mitigating the acute shortage of water that persist in the village. Shri. Sibendra Nath Talukdar Technical Officer T-5, narrated regarding the process and methodology of construction of Jalkund to the villagers. He also disseminated different low cost rain water harvesting methods. Shri. S. Peter Singh, SMS, Social Sciences, KVK Anjaw requested each and every individuals villagers to join hands in digging pond on participatory mode for construction of Jalkund. Presently, the village is adopted under the Tribal Sub Plan funded project “Development of Rainwater Harvesting Structure for Year Round Production at Anjaw District” and “Mera Gaun Mera Gaurav”
