Brief report on Farmers awareness program organized jointly by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya & National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur on 22nd March, 2016

 

A one day awareness program was organized on the 22nd March 2016 at Nongumlong, East Khasi Hills, District on “The Importance of Agricultural Marketing” jointly by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya & National Institute of Agricultural Marketing, Jaipur. The awareness program was attended by 60 participants who are farmers from the above mentioned village. The program began with a welcome speech by the Headman of Nongumlong Village and it was followed by the speech of Dr. Aniruddha Roy, Scientist (Agril. Economics), Division of Social Sciences, ICAR RC for NEH Region, Umiam who had made the farmers aware on the importance of agricultural marketing in the region. He had mentioned the need of value addition of many agricultural products (fruits, ginger and turmeric) that could fetch a higher price in the market as compared to the raw agricultural produce. He also mentioned the value addition of pork and the by-products that can be made from pork which could also fetch additional income for the farmers in the region. He further asserted the need to form Farmers’ groups so that they can market their agricultural produce easily and can also avail the various benefits from the Central as well as the State Govt. It was then followed by P. Sinha Scientist (Agril. Extension) who also made the farmers aware that the right decision making regarding the choice of crops to be grown could make them earn higher income and that they could take agriculture not only as a means of income but as a business venture. It was then followed by a farmer – scientists interaction and then the program concluded with a vote of thanks from the Headman of Nongumlong Village.
