ICAR- KVK organizes Animal Health Camp at Nandok

 

ICAR - Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ranipool, organized Animal Health Camp on November 10, 2016 at Nandok village of Nandok GPU, East Sikkim under the National Innovations on Climate Resilient Agriculture Technology Demonstraion Component (NICRA-TDC) project. The need for such a camp was necessitated after climate change effects have become noticeable on disease prevalence, productive and reproductive performance of livestock even in Sikkim. More than 65 farmers from Nandok attended and received treatment for their livestock. This camp covered treatment of more than 110 cattle, 45 goats, 15 pigs and more than 1200 backyard poultry birds. Moreover, during the health camp animals were dewormed against internal and external parasites as well as supplemented with essential mineral mixture and vitamins for higher productive and reproductive performance.

The programme was inaugurated by Dr. R.K. Avasthe, Joint Director, ICAR- NOFRI, Tadong, Gangtok, who emphasized on the importance of the livestock sector for livelihood security of farmers. He stressed upon improvement in management of scientific housing, breeding, feeding and health coverage as part of the Swacch Bharat Mission. He also added that livestock farming combined with agriculture plays an important role in strengthening the rural economy of Sikkim. Addressing the gathering he briefed on sustainability organic farming through integration of livestock farming. He encouraged the farmers towards establishing the livestock at their own farm for sources of organic inputs within the farm to reduce dependence on outside inputs.

Dr. Raghavendra Singh, Programme Coordinator (I/c) KVK - East Sikkim highlighted the main aim behind the animal health camp was to make farmers aware about animal health as well as providing necessary treatment to their livestock. The farmers were also made aware of the effect of climate change in the agriculture and livestock production. Further, it was suggested to farmers to implement every possible technology for converting livestock farming into profitable venture.

Dr. P.K Pathak, SMS (Animal Science) elaborated about the existence of major livestock and poultry diseases in the locality, their preventive and control measures. He also highlighted about the importance of scientific animal housing for profitable livestock and agriculture operation. 7-8 numbers of local educated youths will be trained as paravets by the Animal Scientist of ICAR-KVK East Sikkim which will help in smooth follow up of the necessary treatment procedure in Nandok village.

Dr. J.K. Singh, SMS (Plant Breeding) and Miss Anushree Gogoi, Programme Asstt. (Home Science) assisted in the smooth execution of the programme.
