ICAR Research complex for NEH region, Umiam organized North East Regional Agri Fair 2015
North East Regional Agri Fair was organised at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam on 9th & 10th January2015 alongwith the Institute 41st Foundation Day. The Agri Fair was inaugurated by Former Vice Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University and Founder Director, ICAR (RC), Umiam, Dr. D. N. Borthakur in presence of Dr. K.M.Bujarbaruah, Vice Chancellor, Assam Agricultural University, Dr. P. Das, Former DDG (Agril. Extn.), New Delhi, Dr. S.P. Ghosh, Former DDG (Horti.), New Delhi, Dr. V.A Parthasarathy, Former Director, CSRI, Calicut, Dr. A. Singh, Former HOD (Agril. Engg.), ICAR, Umiam & IARI, New Delhi, Dr. Ramesh Chandra, Joint Director (Extn.), Ministry of Agril. Cooperation, Govt. of India and Dr. S. V. Ngachan, Director, ICAR (RC), Umiam.The objective of the Fair was to create the awareness among the farmers and various stakeholders in the emerging challenges arising due to shift in climate and its implications on the Food Security and Nutritional Security in NEH Region and itsadaptation and mitigation strategy through showcasing of the technologies and clarifying the doubts of the farmers through the farmers scientists interaction. To address the various problems faced by the farmers, the Farmers’ Scientists interaction was organised wherein the Scientists working in Technology Demonstration component (NICRA) directly interacted with the farmers and clarified their doubts and also suggested the measurers to be adopted to mitigate the problems arising due to the climate change. Dr. S.V.Ngachan, Director, ICAR (RC), Umiam emphasizedon more use of ICTs to communicate to the farmers about the weather information which will be helpful for the farmers to take the immediate intervention as per the requirements. More than 20 institutions working under National Agriculture Research Systems viz., CAU, AAU, NRC Pig, NRC Orchid, KVK Hailakandi, KVK West Garo Hills, KVK West Khasi Hills, KVK East Khasi Hills, KVK Dimapur,KVK East Sikkim, Deptt. and government departments like Fishery, Veterinary, Deptt. of Horticulture,Deptt. of Agriculture, Govt. of Meghalaya, Farmer SHG, etc participated and showcased their technologies. Around 600 farmers from various states of NE Region like Assam, Sikkim, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Meghalaya participated. On the occasion, seeds and plantingmaterials of improved crop varieties were distributed to about 50 farmers from the region. Dr. A.K. Tripathi, HOD Social Science and Organizing Secretary, NE Agri Fair coordinated the programme.
