“Training programme on Empowerment of women in conflict areas of Ribhoi by leveraging sustainable Agri-microenterprise for enhancing livelihood and nutritional security” - 23rd to 31st January 2017
A 7 days training programme funded by Tribal Sub Plan was organized by Division of Animal Health, ICAR Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region, Umiam, Meghalaya during 23rd to 31st January 2017. A total of 31 farmers from Pdeng Tleit, Jatalong, Umroi Nongrah, Mawpun and Nongsder attended the training programme. The village Pdeng Tleit, and Jatalong are in the border conflict area of Assam Karbi Anglong border and their main source of income is broom cultivation. This training and subsequent follow up is aim to address the plight of this marginalized section primarily through societal developmental measures for sustainable livelihood, economic improvement. It will basically target in skill development for various livelihoods initiatives focus on improving the livelihoods of women small and marginal farmers through agri-microenterprises interventional approach. The main objective of this training programme was to create awareness among the tribal women farmers as well as imbibe them with skills of scientific intervention in agricultural micro-enterprises for sustainable agricultural remedies involving scientific livestock, horticultural crop production practices, promotion of homestead garden for nutrition, backyard poultry/piggery feeding, breeding, housing and health care management, aquaculture, intergrated fish based farming, farming system models, fruit processings, mushroom cultivation, vermicomposting technology, soil nutrient management, and better disease and integrated pest management practices. So the farmers were given 19 lecture sessions (power points, videos) and 9 practical demonstrations, exposure visits to ICAR farms done in collaboration with different divisions of Animal production, Poultry, Diary, Fishery, Pathology, Horticulture, Social sciences, Agronomy and farming systems. These farmers have never attended any training programme earlier so they have expressed so much interest in such initiatives from ICAR in future also. The farmers were also provided with training manual “Scientific Interventions in Agricultural micro-enterprise for Empowerment of Tribal women to Enhance Livelihood and nutritional Security” for sharing knowledge and future reference.
