Vaccination programme against Classical Swine Fever in piglets organised under Biotech-KISAN Project on 28.8.19.

A vaccination programme against Classical Swine Fever in piglets was organised in Aspirational District Ri Bhoi of Meghalaya under Biotech-KISAN (Krishi Innovation Science Application Network) Project entitled “Establishment of Biotech-KISAN Hub at ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam, Meghalaya ”, sponsored by DBT, Govt. of India, on 28.8.19. This Biotech-KISAN project is running on Four Clusters (comprising two villages in each Cluster) in this aspirational District and the name of particular villages where the vaccination programme was undertaken are Umshorshor village and Lummynri Village under Cluster-IV of the project. The vaccine was given to individual piglet by visiting door-to-door of piglet beneficiaries as well as some where beneficiaries gathered their piglets in a common place particularly in Lummynri Village. A total of 34 piglets were vaccinated in this programme to save these piglets from Classical Swine Fever (CSF) disease-one of the most dreaded and devastating viral disease of pigs. Dr. R. Laha, Principal Scientist & Hub Facilitator/ Project Coordinator of the Project lead the team and told that the disease causes economic losses to the pig owners by causing mortality, stunted growth and reproductive problems. Pyraxia generally more that 400C, conjunctivitis, anorexia, lethargy, respiratory signs, incoordination of movements, abortions and still birth are some of the symptoms of the disease by which farmers can also suspect that their piglets are infected with this disease. Here lapinized swine fever vaccine has been used and that were brought from Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Govt. of West Bengal, Kolkata as there is a crisis of availability of this vaccine in Meghalaya. The Mahila Kisan Biotech Fellows of these two villages i.e. Smt. Lawanshisha Ryntathiang (Lummynri Village) and Smt. Sita Mary Lyngkhoi (Umshorshor village), helped to organise the programme. Mr. Yearbok Marwein (JRF), Ms. Ibanylla Swer (JRF) and Rishanlang Majaw (Skilled Labour) of the project, actively participated and helped to organise the programme. Dr. R. Laha, Hub Facilitator thanks Dr. A. Sen, P.S. & Head, Division of Animal Health & Co-PI, for overall guidance, Dr. Samir Das, Scientist &Co-P.I. for procuring the vaccine, All PIs and Co-PIs of the project, all piglet beneficiaries for their cooperation and also thanks Mr. Edward Syiemlieh (Headman of the Umshorshor village) and Mr. Drosing (Headman of the Lummynri village) for their active support to implement this project in this village Cluster.
