Field day on Maize (RCM-1-3)-Blackgram (Tripura Mashkolai) cropping system

KVK, Ri Bhoi, ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Umiam celebrated Field day on Maize-Blackgram cropping system on 23rd Nov 2016 at Umeit village under TSP project. The programme was conducted to show the beneficial effect of double cropping/cropping system for increasing cropping intensity and enhancing livelihood of rural population.

Maize is the second most important food grain crop of Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. The pulse crop blackgram grown after harvest of maize or intercropping with maize in the system could enhance the soil health and provides opportunities to get rid of risk of crop failure. Maize (var. RCM-1-3) and Blackgram (var. Tripura Meshkalai) were grown as per trainings/demonstrations conducted by SMS of KVK in the field of Mrs. Bidalin Lyngdoh of Umeit village.

About 25 farmers/farm women and rural youth took part in the programme from the village and nearby villages. Programme Coordinator, KVK, Ri-Bhoi highlighted the importance of taking second crop in a system and advised the farmers to adopt such short duration variety of blackgram after maize crop for sustainable agricultural productivity. The programme has created a very good impact among the farming community of the area. Farmers have promised to take up such crops for the next coming season
