Three days training programme on Cultivation aspects and improved agronomic practices of wheat suitable for NEH region

     ICAR Research Complex for NEH region, Umiam organized three days training programme on Cultivation aspects and improved agronomic practices of wheat suitable for NEH region from 24th-26th March, 2021 at Plant Breeding section, ICAR-RC-NEH Region, Umiam under external project, AICRP Wheat and Barley trials under NEH component: Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research, Karnal. A total of Thirty farmers from Nongthymmai and Mawnohsynrum village attended the programme. The objectives of the programme was to give introductory knowledge and prospects of wheat cultivation with respect to northeastern climatic condition, their crop management practices, critical stages for crop stresses and respective plant protection measures. The programme was coordinated by Dr. Amit Kumar and Dr. Philanim W.S., and co-coordinated by Dr. R.  Krishnappa and Dr. A. Rattan Kumar. The training commenced with a welcome note from Dr. Amit Kumar, scientist, Plant Breeding where he talked about the potential of wheat cultivation in NEH region and explained about the cultivation prospects of wheat. Dr Philanim W.S, Scientist, Plant Breeding stressed about the importance and opportunity of quality wheat seed production. Further, Dr. R Krishnappa, Scientist, Plant Physiology discussed about the effect of environment on wheat quality and benefit of Rice- Wheat cropping system in enhancing cropping intensity and income generation of farmers. Dr A Rattan Kumar, scientist, Plant Pathology explained about the diseases and pest that affects wheat and discussed their management. Throughout the training programme, the trainees showed eagerness in learning about various cultivation aspects of wheat and expressed their desires to further grow the crop in their farms. The farmers were encouraged to take up wheat as a rabi crop to endorse double cropping and promote food diversification.
