KVK East Sikkim conducted Diagnostic Visits
KVK East Sikkim organized a diagnostic survey on July 25, 2016 at Thanka Martam, East Sikkim in which Dr. N. J. Singh, Subject Matter Specialist (Plant Protection), Mr. Boniface Lepcha, Subject Matter Specialist (Horticulture) and Mrs. Annushree Gogoi, Prog. Asstt. (Home Science) involved. The team visited farmers’ field under large cardamom plantations, Sikkim mandarin orchard and ginger field of Sh. Sonam Tshering Bhutia, Sh. Phurba Bhutia, Sh. Pincho Bhutia, Sh. Dorjee Ongel Bhutia, Sh. Lakchung Bhutia and Sh. Karma Tashi Bhutia. During the visit the team observed the infestation of leaf feeding caterpillar in large cardamom, soft rot diseases in ginger and decline in Sikkim mandarin fruiting for which control and management practices have been advocated to the farmers. Farmers were suggested to drench with COC @ 0.25% at weekly interval in ginger field provided with proper drainage facility. The farmers were also advised to use healthy and disease free planting material/suckers of large cardamom with complete organic production technology practices. Farmers encouraged for entrepreneurship development through large cardamom nursery raising technology. Low cost rain water harvesting structure through Jalkund, for supplemental irrigation during winter season was also demonstrated with a dimensions of 5 m × 4 m × 1.5 m in the village. The stored can be a tool for water requirement in large cardamom during winter dry season by using gravitational sprinkle irrigation set ups. It was observed that Sikkim mandarin orchard was damaged by the biotic and abiotic factors leading to heavy decline in fruiting in the village. The farmers were imparted with recommended organic package of practices in the orchard for better economic returns in the consequence year. At the end, the team collected soil samples for further analysis in laboratory.
